How to play Pictionary

  1. 1

    Make two teams

Any number of players works, from two pairs to a whole class. Each team needs paper or a whiteboard, and something to draw with.

  2. 2

    Give the drawer a word

One player from a team presses Next word and looks at it alone. Hide the word, or turn the screen away, before the others look.

  3. 3

    Start the timer and draw

The drawer has 60 seconds to draw the word for their team. No letters, no numbers, no talking and no acting it out: only drawing.

  4. 4

    Guess, score, swap

If the team says the word before time runs out, they get a point. Then the other team draws. Take turns drawing, and the first team to an agreed score wins.

Pictionary rules, in short

  • Only draw: no letters, numbers or symbols that spell the word, and no talking or gestures.
  • You may draw dashes to show how many words there are, and point at parts of your drawing.
  • One minute per word works for most groups; give younger kids 90 seconds.
  • For a twist, play "all play": both teams guess the same drawing and the first to shout it wins the point.

Questions

about the word generator

What are good Pictionary words?

Things everyone knows and can picture, that take more than one line to draw: a snowman, a lighthouse, juggling, a haunted house. Easy words are single objects and animals; harder ones are actions, places and phrases like "time flies". Pick a level to match your players.

What are hard Pictionary words?

Words you can't just draw as one object: ideas like gravity or teamwork, actions like daydreaming or eavesdropping, and sayings like "raining cats and dogs" or "once in a blue moon". Choose Hard, or the Phrases and sayings category.

How many words do I need for a game?

About ten per player for an evening: each turn uses one word, and a round of six players takes around ten minutes with a 60-second timer. The generator never repeats a word until it has dealt them all.

Can kids play?

Yes. Every word here is family-friendly, and Easy words are things young kids can draw: animals, food and things around the house. Teachers use it on a projector with the full-screen button, or print the word cards.

How do you play Pictionary over a video call?

The drawer opens this page on their phone to see the word privately, then draws on a shared screen or holds paper up to the camera, while everyone else guesses out loud or in the chat.
