How to draw everyday objects
-
1
Find the simple shapes
A mug is a cylinder, a book is a box, a lamp is a cone on a stick. Sketch those shapes lightly before any detail.
-
2
Draw what you see
If you have the object, put it in front of you. Look at it more than at your paper, and draw the angles as they are, not as you know them to be.
-
3
Find the light
Decide where the light comes from, then shade the side facing away and add the shadow it casts on the table. That's what makes it look solid.
-
4
Make it yours
Change its color, its size or its mood. Turn on Bring it to life and draw a teapot that's very sleepy: everyday things make great characters.
Ways to use a random object
Still life practice
Roll three objects, find them around the house, and arrange them on a table by a window. Draw them together, overlaps and shadows included.
Characters
Turn on Bring it to life. A toaster having the worst day ever or a cactus as a superhero is a character waiting to be designed.
Games and warm-ups
Everyone draws the same random item in one minute, then compares. For a guessing game, play with the Pictionary word generator.

Questions
about random objects
What is a random object generator?
A tool that picks a thing for you to draw, so you can stop deciding and start drawing. This one picks from everyday objects, from a teapot to a treasure chest, one at a time or three for a still life.
What objects are good to draw for practice?
Things you can put in front of you: a mug, a shoe, a piece of fruit, a pair of scissors, a houseplant. Drawing from life teaches you shapes, light and shadow faster than drawing from memory.
How do I draw a still life?
Roll three objects, set them on a table near a window, and look for the big shapes first: how they overlap and where the shadows fall. Sketch those lightly, then add the details.
Can I use it as a random item generator for games?
Yes. Use it for drawing games, warm-ups or a speed round: everyone draws the same object in one minute and compares. For guessing games, try the Pictionary word generator.
Is it free?
Yes. It's free, with no sign-up and no ads.
