A few tips

Start with one shape

Draw a circle, a squiggle or a box, then ask what it could become. A doodle grows from there.

Repeat and change

Draw the same small thing ten times, changing one detail each time. Rows of tiny things look great on a page.

Use a pen

No eraser means no fussing. Mistakes turn into part of the doodle.

Fill the edges

Margins, corners and the space around your notes are the best places to doodle. Let them grow inward.

Questions

and honest answers

What should I doodle?

Anything small you can draw without thinking: stars, flowers, faces, arrows, patterns, little animals or the things on your desk. The first section on this page has tiny ones for margins.

What are easy doodles to draw?

Hearts, stars, clouds, swirls, little flowers, smiley faces, boxes, leaves and lightning bolts. They're one or two lines each and look good repeated.

How do I start doodling?

Pick up a pen and draw one shape, then add to it. Doodling works best without a goal, so don't plan it: just keep the pen moving for a few minutes.

Is doodling good for you?

Many people find it helps them relax and focus, especially while listening. It's also a low-pressure way to get used to drawing every day.
